Objectives – Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics

The aim of the BSc Pharmacology programme is to train middle level manpower in the area of drug development so as to fill in the gaps in the pharmaceutical industry, research institutes, and as trainers in the college of medicine, college of pharmacy, school of nursing and allied health sciences.  The objectives are to train students to become:

Scientists and researchers in health-related industries

Skilled health care workers in pharmaceutical industries in the area of drug development

Have broad knowledge of pharmacologists who will be able to specialize in different areas of the field.

Future pharmacology teachers in the University most especially in the School of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, School of Nursing and in other disciplines allied to health sciences.

The programme will be sufficiently broad-based to lead to the production of graduates who will be able to perform the following functions:

  • Teach Pharmacology to Medical, Dental, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Sciences students and those of other related disciplines.
  • Acquire competence in the use of basic and clinical pharmacology laboratory equipment.
  • Participate at the basic level in drug discovery and development projects.
  • Promote Pharmacology as a subject through research that will lead to the acquisition of higher qualifications such as M.Sc. and Ph. D. degrees.
