PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEGREE

PROGRAMME IN THE COLLEGE

OF SOCIAL AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES

PHILOSOPHY

The College of Social and Management Sciences is one of the pioneer colleges of Afe Babalola University. Its strategic importance is in the fact that it combines two most important aspects of modern life; social and management sciences. The College is different from the traditional social science faculties in the existing Nigerian universities in the fact that it boasts of carefully selected and highly relevant social and management courses.

The programmes of the college are designed to improve on the following:

  • National Universities Commission’s Basic Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS).
  • Academic Curricula of the related professional certificates courses, such as: the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) and the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN).

The Programmes are designed to prepare the students to sit for their professional certificates at the appropriate stages, such that the students upon graduation are also equipped with their relevant academic and professional degrees. The College has designed highly practical courses that will equip our graduates as problem solvers in the society. Some of the cardinal principles that have shaped the philosophy of this College are;

  • Labour, service and integrity, delivered in most socially relevant manner that will guarantee world peace, national, continental and global economic prosperity
  • Healthy interaction of man with his social and physical environment
  • Social engineering skills that are designed to entrench good corporate and political governance at all levels
  • Early identification and peaceful resolution of disputes in the society
  • Establishment of effective, accountable and well cultured leaders who will use these skills in non-manipulative and exploitative ways to advance the course of humanity.
  • Management skills that are predicated upon effective and efficient utilization of human and material resources in most sustainable and result oriented ways.

In order to achieve these, the College is set to achieve, among other things, the following objectives:

OBJECTIVES

  • To create the most conductive atmosphere for learning and research for students in order to make them capable of independent thinking, socially relevant and able to exercise their talents in the most positive and profitable ways.
  • To inculcate in students the virtues of hard work, creative thinking, originality of ideas, critical enquiry into norms and values, quality problem-solving approach to issues and positive projection of their immediate environment to the outside world.
  • To produce graduates who are well groomed in human relation skills, exhibiting the best of character in the society and capable of leading the modern world in all field of human endeavour, particularly in the fields of politics, business and economics.
  • To produce a new generation of industrialists that will employ holistic approach to the relationship between labour and capital in order to deliver a more enduring economic prosperity without compromising the need for quality assurance, human capital development and the general well being of the human society.
  • To produce graduates who are not only employable but are also employers of labour in their various fields and who will utilize the available resources in liberating the Africa continent from its present economic difficulties.

In line with the above philosophy and objectives the College is committed to academic excellence and the transformation of educational standards in Nigeria through a rigorous combination of teaching, research and community service and places emphasis on the delivery of high quality education, in line with national and international rankings.  Our approach to education embraces the advance methods of interactive teaching and learning that maximizes the potential of students for a future that is rich in leadership qualities, innovation and creativity.
