College of Sciences | Overview

The College of Sciences is one of the three pioneer Colleges at Afe Babalola University. It took off at the inception of academic work in January, 2010.

The College has the colour ‘Gold’ as the College colour, and according to the University Colours, ‘Gold’ stands for ‘Wisdom’

The pioneer Provost College of Sciences is Professor Mike Olufemi Ajisafe: B.Sc (Hons); M.Ed; (Ohio); Ed.D (Temple), the first Professor of Sports Science in Africa.

This College has the very advantage of being established at a time the world is facing unprecedented global challenges in almost every sector of its existence. These range from global resistant diseases, trans-boarder terrorism, cyber-crime, inadequately regulated information and technological revolution, to mention but a few. These challenges have gradually and steadily shifted from national to international levels as the world is becoming a global village. One thing that is obvious from these challenges is the need for fresh ideas and innovation. Thus, there is the urgent need to reappraise our fundamental assumptions and re-evaluate our scientific discoveries, among other things. The Afe Babalola University and, in particular, its College of Sciences is established with these challenges in mind.

Considering that the African continent is the worst hit by these challenges and the least prepared to face them, the College has taken a bold step to lead in providing the much needed intellectual basis for solving these problems. It is in the light of this herculean task that it was carefully developed from inception to this stage.

The College is poised to help reverse the trend of low scientific output of Nigeria to the world by taking the leading role in research and development of science.

Another area of distinction which makes the College different from its counter-parts in Nigeria is the area of curriculum and study methods. The College has in addition to the NUC curriculum developed internal highly practical courses in line with leading scientific challenges in the world today. It has also, in line with the University policy, adopted the case-study method of teaching which has proved useful in producing graduates with actual knowledge of their course of study.

The College is committed, through these various programmes, to produce the best graduates in the different disciplines bearing in mind the vision and mission of the founder of the University, Aare Afe Babalola, B.ScEcons (London), LL.B Hons (London), LL.D, FCIArb, FNILAS, OFR, CON, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), a renowned Philanthropist and one of the distinguished legal luminaries of the present age. He has dedicated so much of his life to the cause of higher education and has spoken so much about the exigencies of Nigerian Universities. ABUAD is a practical demonstration of these long-standing conviction and experiences while the College of Science of the University provides the spring board in this regard.

It is part of the philosophy of the College of Sciences of this University to engage in innovative and result-oriented inter-disciplinary scientific research, be a citadel for ceaseless search for new and positive scientific knowledge that will guarantee sustainable development and remain a fountain of the purest and highest attainable standards of human knowledge, incorporating global best practices and cutting-edge scientific methodologies.
