ABUAD LAUNCHES LAW JOURNAL & JOURNAL OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT LAW AND POLICY

Determined to change Nigeria’s educational landscape in favour of functional reformatory education with world-class reading/instructional materials and promote intellectual excellence, Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) launched two journal in the Ekiti state capital on Friday, June 21, 2013.

The journals are the ABUAD Law Journal, the treasured baby of the College of Law and the Journal of Sustainable Development Law and Policy, put together by the university’s young multidisciplinary Institute for Oil, Gas, Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development (OGEES).

Interestingly and not minding the resources like time, money and manpower as well as innovative academic research invested into the production of the high quality journals, the Founder/Chancellor of the university, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, has directed that they be distributed free of cost as part of his continuous investment in education and eradication of poverty of ideas and imagination.

A must read for students, Legal Practitioners, Law teachers, Jurists and publicists who want to have deeper perspectives on contemporary issues in law, ABUAD Law Journal which will feature full blown legal articles, case notes and reviews of court judgments promises to solve the nagging and protracted problem of dearth of reading materials and serve as a veritable replacement for old Law Reports in the country.

Besides, it promises to redress the hitherto profound academic culture which has now been bastardised and fouled with thoughtless writing and an overdose of junk and second rate materials.

The maiden edition of the journal has 13 well-researched publications in form of full blown articles, case notes or outright (book) reviews authored by seasoned and erudite Law teachers, world class scholars and robust Legal Practitioners of note as well as distinguished members of the Bench who emit knowledge.

In her preface to the first edition of the Law Journal, Mrs. E. Smaranda Olarinde, an Associate Professor of Law, who doubles as the Provost of the College of Law and the Editor-in-Chief of the journal  said:  “From all indications and particularly judging from the enthusiasm and warm disposition that have greeted the publication, ABUAD Law Journal promises to be an enduring legal souvenir that will be well sought after by everyone  who has been bitten by the bug of knowledge and those who genuinely desire learning and erudition.”

The most exciting of the articles is the one written by Aare Afe Babalola himself titled: “A Call for Review or Abolition of Archaic, Anachronistic and Unconstitutional Laws – Section 84 of the Sherrifs and Civil Process Act Protecting Government from Payment of Judgment Debt.”

The article is vintage Babalola, who at 84 still has the time and prodigious energy to write such a succinct article with incisive and profound intellectual arguments.  Above all, it shows an unrepentant commitment not only to the development of his first love (law); but also his passion to see change in every sphere of human endeavour.

On its part, the Journal of Sustainable Development Law and Policy is published by the Institute of Oil, Gas, Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development, an independent multi-disciplinary Institute at ABUAD.

Established in 2012, the Institute’s vision is to achieve sustainable energy development while its mission is to use legal and policy framework to achieve more inclusive and equitable management of the country’s energy resources within safer, healthier and wealthier communities.

The strategic objective of the Institute is to utilize policy, national and international law and institutions to promote the sustainable exploration of natural resources, protect the environment and human health, promote energy security and foster a progressive shift towards renewable energy resources in Nigeria, nay, the world over.
