Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences
INTRODUCTION
Medical Laboratory Science is a dynamic profession that is designed to provide a broad basis for fundamental scientific knowledge and its application, such that the graduates are well equipped to meet the changing needs of modern scientific knowledge in Health Care, to enable them proceed for further training nationally and internationally.
Students of the discipline at this level are exposed to application of Medical Laboratory Science in key areas such as Medicine, Medical sciences Food and beverages, Pharmaceutical Industries, Utility departments (e.g. Water Corporations), and Research Institutes.
The courses offered are designed to expose the students to core areas like clinical chemistry, Hematology, Histopathology, Medical Microbiology and Immunology/Immunochemistry as well as Instrumentation.
The practical aspect of the programme prepares the students to fit into any diagnostic laboratory in hospitals, research Institutions Food laboratories and other allied fields, or be self-employed. On the successful completion of the five (5) year programme, students can proceed for further training at higher levels, are eligible for registration as Associate members with the professional regulatory body (i.e. Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.
(A) PHILOSOPHY OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE PROGRAMME
The broad philosophy of training in Medical Laboratory Science is:
(a) To provide sound academic and professional background for the production of Medical Laboratory Scientists who would be capable of working anywhere in Nigeria and internationally.
(b) To produce Medical Laboratory Scientists who would satisfy internationally recognizable standards and who could undertake further training towards specialization
(c) To produce Medical Laboratory Scientists with sufficient management ability to play a leadership role in training and the practice of laboratory science.
